We have received word from an unknown source that the developers of an upcoming iPhone game named S.K.A.T.E., have been sent a cease and desist letter from EA games. The letter basically states that EA owns the rights and trademarks to “Skate” and that the developers need to cease and desist their usage of the “S.K.A.T.E.” name.
S.K.A.T.E. is a “horse style” skate boarding game for the iPhone and iPod touch, where you basically try to out trick your opponent by doing crazier and crazier moves. At this point EA Games has nothing like this game in the iPhone App store. Call us conspiracy theorists, but we believe that EA Games is porting their popular Skate franchise over to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform and that is the reason for the cease and desist letter to the S.K.A.T.E. developers. In my opinion, how else would they have even known that there was a similar named game in the iPhone App store? With the extreme rise in popularity of games on the iPhone, this would not be a huge surprise.
What will the developers of S.K.A.T.E. do? Will EA Games be releasing a port of their Skate game anytime soon? Will Steve Jobs be a secret character that can perform moves that make even Tony Hawk look like a n00b? Stay tuned to iphone Docked for all these answers and more.
