Looking for cheaper Apps?

Posted June 11th, 2009 in Apps, Games, iPhone, iTunes by smileyelectric

I love having all 50,000 Apps at my fingertips. But with so many apps, how do you find what you want? There are a few ways that I like to use.
The App Appsniper works great. It list all new apps, discounted ones, hot apps and etc. This app is in the Appstore and cost $0.99.

If you are a tweeter you can subscribe to PriceChanges. They have all the price changes of apps. For an example, the app Peggle is now $0.99 and Need For Speed is $6.99 down from $9.99.

Whatever way you choose make sure you find a way to stay up on all the App deals on the Appstore.

Why jailbreaking is going to rock on 3.0

I jailbroke my iPhone about a week ago. I have been really suprised. I found quite a few apps that I could acutally use. While there are quite a few themes, enough to give ” those Bastards from Findland” ( thanks Edward @msmobiles) a run for their money.
The down side of this is that the iPhone becomes unstable.
An example of this is I installed winterboard which is basically a theme app. Winterboard is cool and has some sweet themes, which are very easy to install. But the app seems to reload the theme everytime you go back to the home screen or switch between apps. Since the iPhone wasn’t made to deal with that kind of transition, ocassionally the app will freeze up the iPhone.

Which brings me to the following speculation. I believe that the next Gen iPhone will be even better with jailbreaking. Why? More RAM. With all these memory intensive apps 3.0 and hopefully a new iPhone will be great.

16 Must Have Games for the Casual Gamer on the iPhone

I love gaming as much as the next unemployed, middle aged, balding, ADHD male.  However to sit down and focus on a  hardcore game on my iPhone is beyond my 30 sec. attention span (SQUIRREL) .  Instead I like to pull out a game that I can open quick, play a round, and be done with.  Here is a whole iPhone page worth of must have casual gaming apps for your (SQUIRREL) iPhone. Hello to everyone, here are my “Must Have” apps!

Posted May 24th, 2009 in Apps, Games, iPhone, iPhone Apps, iPhone Games by Craig

Hey everyone, my name is Craig and I hope to be writing many pieces for iPhone Docked in the future.

Onto the good stuff- here is a list of my 3 MUST HAVE apps for the iPhone.

#3- PingPong

Skyworks was seriously my favorite gaming company back in 6th grade. They made a lot of games for candystand.com, which was the only game site that we could get to without a proxy (probably shouldn’t have admitted that).

Anyways, this game is great. At a cheap $.99, it is a great time waster and an entertaining game. 3 different paddles can be used which have differing amounts of power and spin. There’s a pretty extensive tournament and arcade section. This article is taking me a while to write solely because of this game.

The tourney mode is basically first to 11 (with a 2 point margin of victory). The arcade mode is more interesting, and much more difficult. You have a half-table, and after a few volleys and serves, you must hit targets to score points. You only have 3 “lives” which correspond to the wall scoring a point on you.  It is a lot faster than the tourney mode, and a lot more frustrating, but adds significant replay value.  I lost the arcade mode 3 times while writing this part. Seriously, I suck at the arcade mode.

#2 ITRANS NYC-

Since I live on the outskirts of Queens, NYC, I like to get out of the ‘burbs and into Manhattan pretty frequently. While I know the MTA system pretty well, the trains have gone batsh*t crazy the last few weekends. Frustrated by being stuck on a local line for an hour longer than I wanted, I picked this app up. It has a feature that alerts you to changes in the trains schedules (which is amazing when it works), has the approximate times that trains arrive in any station which works offline, and has an updated map sanctioned by the MTA. I’ve had this app for a short time, but already I wish that I had it from the day I moved here.

An all around solid application that allows you to plan your trip with minimal frustration that usually accompanies a trip with the NYC subways.

#1 Twitterfon-

I joined Twitter about a year ago in order to keep up with various news stories and just see what it was about. I still use it for that, but now I use it to connect with others that share my various addictions/hobbies. The best free client that I have found is Twitterfon, with a special mention to Natsulion.

Twitterfon is fast, has all the options that a regular user could ask for, and is very stable. An inline browser helps keep the app open until Apple enables apps to run in the background, or you jailbreak and use Backgrounder. @replies (mentions) and DMs are kept both in separate sections and inside your main timeline separated by colors. My main grudge against Twitterfon are courtesy of the last couple of updates, which have kind of killed the ease of clicking links inside tweets, but they seem to slowly getting better. I’d actually rather use Twitterfon than the website. The app has just introduced an ad on the top of your timeline in the latest update, but it isn’t that big of a deal for a free app.

The special mention goes out to Natsulion because it was my first Twitter client on my iPhone, and it has a lion for an icon. Really, it’s sort of cute. Just stare at its eyes for a while. You get lost in there.

Exploring The Pocket God World

I first found out about Pocket God for the iPhone from listening to one of my favorite podcasts This Week In Geek when iCausual reviewed it for the www.portablegamer.com After listening to this I went and found Pocket God and have been torturing the islanders ever since. With weekly episode updates from the developer Bolt Creative Pocket God has gotten increasingly more addictive.

When I first downloaded the game it was at Chapter 11 at that time the torture devices were being able to flick the islanders into the volcano, shake your iPhone for an earthquake, tilt the iPhone for gravity changes, during the cloudy day or night taking a finger and swiping it across the sky to create lightning to fry the natives, and so much more. With more recent updates you can have an ant hill and red fire ants eat the islanders flesh away, you can have the islanders go fishing all the while getting carried away by a shark.

A new island was added about two weeks ago. On this new island it has an outhouse. If one of the little characters is in the bathroom too long the one waiting will explode! In yet another update they added the feature to name the islanders, so this is interesting…. Have an ex girlfriend or boyfriend you want to torture,  but not go to jail for it?

Get Pocket God on your iPhone or iPod Touch, and you can name an islander after them and vent some frustrations. (Note: I have not done this but it just came to me while I’m writing this at 3AM!)

In the most recent update on 5/8/09 the people at Bolt Creative have added a T-Rex option on the 2nd island. There’s a T-Rex egg and if you pick it up and drop it three times the momma T-Rex will come out and eat your islanders. I did this for about 4 hours on Friday draining my iPhone battery.

Between this app and the NEW Twitterrific 2.0 I barely use my iPhone for anything else. As well I might had I had a realization the other night I don’t use the phone on my iPhone hardly anymore it’s mostly IM clients Twitterrific and other various apps and games. However I digress as far as Pocket God goes it’s an awesome little time waster and fun too. At the current time it’s still $0.99 in the app store however after the next update it will go up to $1.99. Boy am I glad I got it at the lower price. Hurry people download this while it’s still cheap, but awesome!

EA Games Releasing Skate Game for iPhone?

Posted May 5th, 2009 in Apps, Games, iPhone by Mobile Mike

skate-20070801062914600

We have received word from an unknown source that the developers of an upcoming iPhone game named S.K.A.T.E., have been sent a cease and desist letter from EA games. The letter basically states that EA owns the rights and trademarks to “Skate” and that the developers need to cease and desist their usage of the “S.K.A.T.E.” name.

S.K.A.T.E. is a “horse style” skate boarding game for the iPhone and iPod touch, where you basically try to out trick your opponent by doing crazier and crazier moves. At this point EA Games has nothing like this game in the iPhone App store. Call us conspiracy theorists, but we believe that EA Games is porting their popular Skate franchise over to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform and that is the reason for the cease and desist letter to the S.K.A.T.E. developers. In my opinion, how else would they have even known that there was a similar named game in the iPhone App store? With the extreme rise in popularity of games on the iPhone, this would not be a huge surprise.

What will the developers of S.K.A.T.E. do? Will EA Games be releasing a port of their Skate game anytime soon? Will Steve Jobs be a secret character that can perform moves that make even Tony Hawk look like a n00b? Stay tuned to iphone Docked for all these answers and more.

Game Review: Lemonade Tycoon

Another classic game that recently hit the App Store is Lemonade Tycoon from Electronic Arts. This unchanged iPhone version appears to be a straight port of the original. Absolutely nothing new to learn here if you’ve played it before which is fantastic. But if by some slight chance you haven’t played it then here’s the goal. Like the name says you must become the best at what you do and here it’s making and selling lemonade. From the neighborhood to the mall or at the beach sell as much as you can by mixing the right amount of lemons, sugar and ice to create that “perfect” glass of nice cold lemonade to draw the most customers.

You’ll also have to contend with different types of weather, locations and a few finicky taste buds and a small starting budget. So spend wisely and price fairly as in real life, people don’t like to be over charged and will pass you by. Use you’re business savvy and you’ll be able to make good money, upgade your stand and even hire additional staff for those really busy days to come.
Remember you are in charge here so there’s no one to help you out, but your customers will let you know if their happy or not with your product. Check your results at the end if the day to see how profitable you were and if you need to make adjustments. Did you buy to many lemons and not enough cups? The value of a dollar is really stressed in the game so whether you decide to play “Career” or the 30-Day Challenge” mode you’ll never look at selling lemonade the same again. Right now you can get Lemonade Tycoon absolutely free in the App Store.

Video Review: Sticky Licky

CORRECTION: the app is $1.99

Sticky Licky from J Doss on Vimeo.

All and all I think this a great game for quick play to beat the boredom but feel there is room to expand.  Would I recommend you buy the app? Truthfully I’m on the fence, but I lean toward yes as long as the developer is committed to building out the game and adding the ability to save your progress. At $2 I think it is a little steep, but if it goes to $.99 I think it would be well worth it. If you bought it, write a mini review in the comments, tell us what you think.

(oh yea this my first video review, let me know what I missed)

Terminator Salvation for the iPhone!!

Thanks to a post over at the Boy Genius Report, we have learned that Gameloft has released a trailer to their upcoming Terminator Salvation game for the iPhone. From what I saw in the trailer this game looks like its going to be pretty awesome! There is all kinds of action from hand to hand combat, rocket launchers, to driving a jeep! The graphics look pretty good and the controls looks like they are implemented very well. The Only thing that could make this trailer hotter, is an appearance from Summer Glau! I can’t wait to get my hands on this game and give it a try! Check the trailer out below!
