SlingPlayer 1.1 For the iPhone On the Way

sling1-1

Sling media, the guys behind the application SlingPlayer, have submitted the latest version of their application to Apple. Sadly this new version does NOT include 3G support, but does offer 16×9 viewing and some overall speed increases.

To add insult to injury, they have submitted a 3G capable version for use outside the United States. Only time will tell if it will get approved or not, but for us in the good ol’ US of A, were strictly WiFi only.

App Review: HP iPrint Photo

Posted June 9th, 2009 in Apps, iPhone Apps by WyattLeCadre

Long ago HP made it easy to print your favorite photos directly from the printer without the need of a PC. So how could it get any easier now. Well, HP went along and created iPrint Photo for the iPhone.
What this little app allows you to do is print out 4×6 inch photos straight off your iPhone via WiFi to a network connected HP printer just like their Windows Mobile version.

IPrint Photo is as easy to use as the built-in Photo app. There is no configuration necessary from the iPhone side except for turning on WiFi and connecting to the proper WiFi network. Then all you have to do is run iPrint Photo. Once the printer is recognized by iPrint Photo simply select a picture, press print and iPrint Photo handles the rest.

There’s nothing to it at all. This is a good app for quick photo printing and even even more so for creating postcards.

I think this is an excellent extention to the built-in Photo app. And with the added functionality of the new iPhone coming soon this app is a keeper. You can get HP iPrint Photo for absolutely free. So you have no reason not to at least check it out.

Why jailbreaking is going to rock on 3.0

I jailbroke my iPhone about a week ago. I have been really suprised. I found quite a few apps that I could acutally use. While there are quite a few themes, enough to give ” those Bastards from Findland” ( thanks Edward @msmobiles) a run for their money.
The down side of this is that the iPhone becomes unstable.
An example of this is I installed winterboard which is basically a theme app. Winterboard is cool and has some sweet themes, which are very easy to install. But the app seems to reload the theme everytime you go back to the home screen or switch between apps. Since the iPhone wasn’t made to deal with that kind of transition, ocassionally the app will freeze up the iPhone.

Which brings me to the following speculation. I believe that the next Gen iPhone will be even better with jailbreaking. Why? More RAM. With all these memory intensive apps 3.0 and hopefully a new iPhone will be great.

Wunder Radio Is Wonderful

Posted May 25th, 2009 in Fun, Reviews, iPhone, iPhone Apps by TFG1Podcast

There are tons of radio listening applications for the iPhone, such as Pandora and Last FM. While I like those this one is by far the best I think. I’ve been able to find radio stations from back home in Massachusetts. Plus other cities that I’ve lived in, and even though I don’t use Wunder Radio all that often it is a great application. It’s made by Weather Underground and can be found in the app store for $6.99.

Now I know what your thinking……$6.99 for a simple radio streaming app? uh noooooo…. well even though it is that price it’s still a good app. It’s probably my most used radio streaming application for the iPhone. I’ve tried the other ones I’ve mentioned, but they were just not to my liking. Wunder Radio is much easier to use I find. It’s also very easy for searching for a radio station you might remember from a long time ago.

Even though I don’t use it as much as my iPod on the iPhone it’s still a great app to have. For those of you who use radio apps you really should try this. It took me forever to get the screenshots though. Only because my thumb kept hitting the menu selections that you see at the bottom. grrrrrr. Anyways you radio streaming people go get this app!!

Hello to everyone, here are my “Must Have” apps!

Posted May 24th, 2009 in Apps, Games, iPhone, iPhone Apps, iPhone Games by Craig

Hey everyone, my name is Craig and I hope to be writing many pieces for iPhone Docked in the future.

Onto the good stuff- here is a list of my 3 MUST HAVE apps for the iPhone.

#3- PingPong

Skyworks was seriously my favorite gaming company back in 6th grade. They made a lot of games for candystand.com, which was the only game site that we could get to without a proxy (probably shouldn’t have admitted that).

Anyways, this game is great. At a cheap $.99, it is a great time waster and an entertaining game. 3 different paddles can be used which have differing amounts of power and spin. There’s a pretty extensive tournament and arcade section. This article is taking me a while to write solely because of this game.

The tourney mode is basically first to 11 (with a 2 point margin of victory). The arcade mode is more interesting, and much more difficult. You have a half-table, and after a few volleys and serves, you must hit targets to score points. You only have 3 “lives” which correspond to the wall scoring a point on you.  It is a lot faster than the tourney mode, and a lot more frustrating, but adds significant replay value.  I lost the arcade mode 3 times while writing this part. Seriously, I suck at the arcade mode.

#2 ITRANS NYC-

Since I live on the outskirts of Queens, NYC, I like to get out of the ‘burbs and into Manhattan pretty frequently. While I know the MTA system pretty well, the trains have gone batsh*t crazy the last few weekends. Frustrated by being stuck on a local line for an hour longer than I wanted, I picked this app up. It has a feature that alerts you to changes in the trains schedules (which is amazing when it works), has the approximate times that trains arrive in any station which works offline, and has an updated map sanctioned by the MTA. I’ve had this app for a short time, but already I wish that I had it from the day I moved here.

An all around solid application that allows you to plan your trip with minimal frustration that usually accompanies a trip with the NYC subways.

#1 Twitterfon-

Twitterfon from justplaintech.com

From justplaintech.com

I joined Twitter about a year ago in order to keep up with various news stories and just see what it was about. I still use it for that, but now I use it to connect with others that share my various addictions/hobbies. The best free client that I have found is Twitterfon, with a special mention to Natsulion.

Twitterfon is fast, has all the options that a regular user could ask for, and is very stable. An inline browser helps keep the app open until Apple enables apps to run in the background, or you jailbreak and use Backgrounder. @replies (mentions) and DMs are kept both in separate sections and inside your main timeline separated by colors. My main grudge against Twitterfon are courtesy of the last couple of updates, which have kind of killed the ease of clicking links inside tweets, but they seem to slowly getting better. I’d actually rather use Twitterfon than the website. The app has just introduced an ad on the top of your timeline in the latest update, but it isn’t that big of a deal for a free app.

The special mention goes out to Natsulion because it was my first Twitter client on my iPhone, and it has a lion for an icon. Really, it’s sort of cute. Just stare at its eyes for a while. You get lost in there.

Jailbreaking time…….

Posted May 22nd, 2009 in Apps, Jailbreak, Reviews, iPhone Apps by smileyelectric

I just jailbroke my iPhone again. What is jail breaking and how do you do it? More on that later.
This is now time number 5 or 6 I am jailbreaking. I don’t remember. All the other times I would jailbreak my iPhone just because I could, for status reasons or just to be different This time however, it’s different. Why?
Jailbroken iPhone 3G
Slingplayer.

What does that one app have too do with anything?

Jailbreaking has now provided us with a option, two options to be exact. I will be setting up my Slingbox Solo this weekend. So, stay tuned for more after the break.

Start your engines!!-Indycar App

Posted May 19th, 2009 in Apps, iPhone Apps by smileyelectric

It’s always a bummer to feel like your sport is left out. Especially when it comes to the iPhone. With that huge screen and simple interface it can almost feel like you simply aren’t able to qualify.
NOT ANYMORE!!!!
GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES!!!!!!

A new Indycar app was just released. I think it is a good thing to see the sport looking ahead,  keeping up with the latest technology and trying to get new viewers

So let’s take a lap and see what this app has to offer. GREEN FLAG!!!!!!! GO!!!!!
Checkout the video.

I think all in all a good app. I would like to see some more exclusive to the app videos.  Maybe even the ability to watch live racing ( go ahead and make it Wifi only too…. my jailbreak friends have a app for that).

App Review: Medical Software Triple Play

Posted May 18th, 2009 in iPhone Apps by WyattLeCadre

If you work in the medical field as an Emergency Medical Techician, nurse, doctor, etc. there’s two important things you need to administer effective treatment. Time and pertinent information about the injury or illness. Being an EMT, I can tell you from experience that we rarely have enough of either. So what do we do? We read lots of reference materials, and ask lots of questions when on scene. So to further aid you along in this field of continued learning here are 3 of the most widely known and used mobile medical reference software that’s been made available to the iPhone.

Starting with Epocrates Rx, a free drug reference guide whose strength lies in it’s pill identification and drug interactions database. Using only physical characteristics you can identify almost any unlabelled pill found at the scene of an incident. This is just one of the many tools available in Epocrates Rx. Also included are drug interactions, dosing, various medical calculators and up-to-date clinical and research information you get a lot without spending a dime.

If you require even more you can upgrade to the Premium Clinical Reference which is the paid subscription version by just tapping on the free trial from within Epocrates Rx itself. This upgrade adds many extras such as peer-reviewed disease content, evidence-based treatment options, alternative medications and a conscise infectious disease treatment guide.

A feature offered in both versions called DocAlerts gives you an outline on some of the latest clinical research information to review every time you sync to the Epocrates server. Should you want a more in-depth look on a particular subject in the DocAlert you can simply have it emailed to you to view the entire article at a later time.

Epocrates is not a dificult piece of software to navigate. Created in a dictionary/reference like format with the search tool permanently fixed at the top; finding information is relatively easy. If you have used Epocrates on any other mobile platform you should have no problem with Epocrates on the iPhone.

Next on the list is PEPID Elements which was created more with the doctor, nurse or medical student in mind. It’s designed to function as a clincal decision support information tool whose main focus is on toxicological emergencies. This resource provides the user with information for identifying and managing a broad range of emergencies from a simple over the counter drug overdose to the more exotic such as insect bites. Continually updated PEPID keeps you on top of the latest research and clinical information as it’s made available.

PEPID Elements is the core of their platinum series of specialty suites. With the platinum series you get more tools like drug interaction generators complete with information like dosing indicators and administration information. There are many more treatment based tools such as IV compatibility, lab manuals and even a symptom-driven diagnosis generator.

PEPID has also kept navigation simple with a similarly styled interface like the one found in Epocrates. So finding information should be a breeze.

The third application here is Skyscape which gives you access to a multitude of resources. Skyscape seems to have the largest library of the three with a current total of 41 individual reference applications for the iPhone alone. Skyscape is most noted from their Palm days with the 5-Minute Clinical Consultant application. They have since worked long and hard to offer as many services as possible in a mobile format.

Starting with Skyscape Medical Resources you get access to all their free offerings which includes a drug reference database, clinical medicine outlines an evidence-based resourse, Archimedics a medical calculator and MedAlerts an up-to-date medical journal and clinical trial resource. All basics for their richer more in-depth premium content.

Skyscape’s paid resources are variably priced as they target specific medical practices. So tailoring Skyscape to your specialty is at the heart of what makes this suite stand out from all the others. From their most famous 5-Minute Clinical Consultant to Hematology/Oncology or the more specific AJCC Cancer Staging Manual there is something for every level of medical professional.

Like the other two applications Skyscape also uses a similar dictionary/reference style interface for navigation and has kept all their mobile offerings in-line with each other to avoid large learning curves between mobile OSes.

As you can see I have only scratched the surface of what any of these applications have to offer. The wealth of information made available is incredible and makes any of these applications an excellent choice for any medical professional no matter the specialized field.

Each one requires you to sign up for a free account on their website allowing full access to all the content in their libraries. So I’d suggest using that to evaluate each one and view the subscription offerings before committing to any particular application suite. No matter which one you choose I’m sure you’ll find something that fits your medical practice needs. So check out Epocrates Rx , PEPID Elements and Skyscape Medical Resources in the App Store.

Smileys-Free App of the Week

Posted May 9th, 2009 in Apps, Wordpress, iPhone Apps by smileyelectric

My free app of the week is Fandango.

The reason I picked Fandango, is because it saved me this pastvweek. I bought 4 tix for Star Trek IMAX. My wife invited someone else at the last min while we were out that night.
I pulled out my iPhone downloaded Fandango, signed into my account and had a ticket bought in about 60 seconds.

Later that night I looked at ticket prices for Star Trek (cuz I knew it was gonna be a hot one….) and the tix were all gone. That was only 45min later!!!!! iPhone saved my weekend.

I know that other phones can buy to on the fly too ( I’ve owned more than 25…. Smartphones, but that’s another story). But no phone can do it like the iPhone and u know it. Yeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh
