Why jailbreaking is going to rock on 3.0

I jailbroke my iPhone about a week ago. I have been really suprised. I found quite a few apps that I could acutally use. While there are quite a few themes, enough to give ” those Bastards from Findland” ( thanks Edward @msmobiles) a run for their money.
The down side of this is that the iPhone becomes unstable.
An example of this is I installed winterboard which is basically a theme app. Winterboard is cool and has some sweet themes, which are very easy to install. But the app seems to reload the theme everytime you go back to the home screen or switch between apps. Since the iPhone wasn’t made to deal with that kind of transition, ocassionally the app will freeze up the iPhone.

Which brings me to the following speculation. I believe that the next Gen iPhone will be even better with jailbreaking. Why? More RAM. With all these memory intensive apps 3.0 and hopefully a new iPhone will be great.

Developers just received an email from Apple asking them for their help testing out push notifications. Apple has asked the developers to install a test app that will begin pushing notifications to them within 48 hours. Does this mean we will see it live and in action come June? I sure hope so!

UPDATE FROM J. DOSS:  Apple has asked developers to install a test version of AP News.  I will keep you updated as soon as I get my first update.

Richard Solo 1200 Backup Battery Review

Posted April 23rd, 2009 in Accessories, Site News by Geoff Farinha

If you’re an on-the-go iPhone user like me then your biggest pet peeve is likely the iPhone’s less than adequate battery life. Enter the Richard Solo 1200 Smart Backup Battery for iPhone and iPod that I recently received from David Ciccone of Mobility Today. A backup battery designed to keep your iPhone running much longer. The 1200 mAh polymerized lithium-ion battery’s capacity is 70-80% of the iPhone battery. Therefore if you have about 20-30% of a charge left on your phone this backup battery will give you a full charge in no time. The backup battery also doubles as a flashlight by being equipped with a bright LED light on the bottom side of the unit. If you’re ever in need of a flashlight in an emergency situation, carrying the Richard Solo pack with you always keeps a bright light within reach. This battery is also compatible with any of the newer iPhone or iPod products.

Included in the box is the Richard Solo 1200 Backup Battery, a USB charging cable and an AC adapter with a USB port. A great feature with the Richard Solo 1200 Battery Backup is that you can charge the iPhone AND the backup battery at the same time! By using Richard Solo’s Smart technology the iPhone or iPod will charge first until it is full and then proceed to charge the backup battery. The ability to safely charge both your phone and the backup battery at the same time is a huge advantage that makes this product a must have!

My only complaint with this product is that when it is attached to the phone, the protruding sync port is vulnerable to damage. There is no way to secure the backup battery to the phone and any wrong movement would easily snap the connector right off.

Overall I am extremely impressed with the Richard Solo 1200 Battery Backup. Being a commuter student who is constantly using the iPhone the Richard Solo 1200 will always be in my backpack to provide my iPhone with that extra needed charge to make it through the day. If you are on the go with your iPhone or iPod then the Richard Solo is for you. You will never need to worry about your battery dying at that critical moment ever again.

Griffin Clarifi Review

Posted April 23rd, 2009 in Apple, Site News, WWDC, iPhone by Geoff Farinha

Are you still searching for that perfect iPhone case? Since purchasing my iPhone 3G back in July I have been on the great hunt for the Holy Grail of cases. After receiving a package from David Ciccone of Mobility Today I can finally say…”I have found the perfect case”.

The Griffin Clarifi is an iPhone 3G case designed to protect your phone and increase the quality of close-up pictures. Griffin has designed the Clarifi with a sliding lens that will slide over your iPhones lens when taking close-up pictures. The lense can then slide back for taking “normal” pictures. Overall I can safely say that the lens on the Clarifi truly does offer a better close-up quality. Below are two example pictures the left picture is without the Clarifi, and the right picture is with the Clarifi:

Without Clarifi With Clarifi

As you can see the Clarifi lives up to its name.

The solid build quality of the Clarifi grants me the confidence that my iPhone is kept safe even through some of the worst drops. The Clarifi is the same slider type design that can be seen on many iPhone cases already. However, the top and bottom portions are coated in rubber for a grip feel while the middle section is a standard glossy plastic. This makes the Clarifi’s design both unique and sleek all at once.

When putting this case onto my phone I noticed that it was lifting up my Zagg Invisible Shield so I decided to use the “dreaded” screen protectors that are supplied with the cases. Much to my surpise the screen protector that Griffin supplied is MUCH better than what I had before. Gone are the orange peel effect and yellowing of the Zagg. I now have a smooth, mirror finish to my screen.

Overall, Griffin has truly hit a grand slam the Clarifi. My quest to find that case is now over and I suggest that if you’re looking for the best possible case around to give the Clarifi a try…you won’t be dissapointed.

Apple: No Plans to Change AT&T Exclusivity

Well there you have it folks! Looks like Apple and AT&T are going to continue thier iPhone exclusive love affair. On a earnings call, Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer basically stated that Apple has enjoyed their relationship with AT&T and they have no plans to break exclusivity at the moment. Sorry you non AT&T folks, the iPhone is staying at home for a while.
